How did you get involved with Chubb’s Employed Lawyers practice?

My career started with a psychology degree and a role in genetic research—an unconventional path that sharpened my interpersonal skills and understanding of human behavior. In the late ’90s, I found an opportunity with Executive Risk, joining as an underwriting associate for Lawyers Professional Liability in 1998. This role opened the door to the insurance world, where I quickly absorbed the fundamental aspects of the industry and set my sights on advancing in underwriting.

After Chubb acquired Executive Risk, I transitioned to the E&O team and was introduced to the Employed Lawyers product—a pivotal moment that deepened my appreciation for the critical role of in-house counsel. Over the years, I’ve held a range of roles, but my passion remains with Employed Lawyers. These attorneys are unsung champions in a company’s risk management team, and my goal is to raise awareness and ensure we’re meeting their unique needs.

What sets the Chubb’s Employed Lawyers Liability insurance coverage apart?

Our extensive expertise and longevity in the market. We've been offering Employed Lawyers Professional Liability Insurance since 1996 and proudly partner with the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC).

Our insurance provides comprehensive coverage tailored to the unique malpractice risks faced by in-house attorneys, including protection against third-party claims and coverage for pro bono and moonlighting services. It is designed to meet the evolving needs of in-house counsel, ensuring they are well-protected in their vital roles.

What is the most important reason why a business should have Employed Lawyers Liability insurance coverage?

In-house attorneys are increasingly tasked with addressing complex legal issues, from date privacy to litigation management. These responsibilities carry risk for error and the potential for claims against them and their legal teams.

D&O policies often don’t extend to claims arising out of personal legal services, moonlighting, or pro bono work and may only apply to select executives. An Employed Lawyers Professional Liability policy offers specialized protection for claimers against in-house legal staff.
