Work Injury Compensation Insurance

Designed to provide coverage for employers and platform operators who are liable to compensate their employees and platform workers respectively who suffer work-related injuries or illness to help cover some medical expenses and loss of wages.

 

Work injury compensation insurance is an essential safeguard for both employers and platform operators, to ensure adequate financial protection for platform workers and employees in case of work injury.1

Under the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA), all employers and/or platform operators are required to buy work injury compensation insurance, from a designated insurer, for:

  • All employees doing manual work, regardless of salary level;
  • All employees doing non-manual work, earning a salary of S$2,600 or less a month, excluding any overtime payment, bonus payment, annual wage supplement, productivity incentive payment and any allowance; and
  • *Effective 1 January 2025* All platform workers.

As noted on the MOM’s website, the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA) is a piece of legislation which allows employees and platform workers to claim for work-related injuries or diseases without having to file a civil suit under common law. It is a low-cost and quicker alternative to common law for settling compensation claims.

  • Employers need to get work injury compensation insurance for all employees doing manual work, as well as all employees earning S$2,600 or less a month.
  • Platform operators need to get work injury compensation insurance for all platform workers.
  • All Work Injury Compensation insurance policies must be issued by a designated insurer,  and must comply with MOM’s compulsory terms.

In the event of a work accident, please inform your platform operator of the work accident as soon as possible. You should also cooperate with your platform operator and their insurer to provide supporting documents, such as the original medical certificates, medical reports, medical bills, or photographs of the accident to facilitate claim processing.
