Winter Storm 101: Who’s at Risk and Preventing Damage

Winter weather can’t always be predicted with 100% accuracy, but most times the forecast provides enough notice so that you can get the essentials ahead of time and stay safe during the storm. Below are a few ways you can prepare:
What to do before a winter storm

Don’t wait until the snow flies. These are things you can do anytime.

  • Prepare an emergency supply kit to sustain your family for 72 hours, including flashlights, a portable radio, extra batteries, nonperishable food, bottled water, cash, blankets, clothing and toiletries.
  • Monitor radio, TV, or social media for updates on the storm.
  • Purchase rock salt or ice melt for your driveway, porch, and walkways.
  • Get your snow shovels, snow blowers, and other equipment ready.
  • Purchase gas for the blower.
  • Stock up on firewood if you have a fireplace. Stockpile extra blankets.
  • Know where lanterns, candles, and matches are located.
  • Have your furnace winterized and change filters.
What to do during a winter storm

Remain calm and stay indoors if at all possible. Avoid travel and check on older loved ones or neighbours.

What to do after a winter storm

Once the storm is over, wait for local authorities to indicate that it’s safe to venture outdoors.

  • Don’t drive unless absolutely necessary. If you do, avoid roads that have not been plowed yet and be careful of black ice.
  • Stay indoors if possible. If you must go out, dress in layers and wear hat, gloves, and shoes with traction.
